Chapter Twelve

** Anson **

The tip of the blade sliced across my upper arm, ripping my t-shirt. A line of blood welled up, staining my sleeve. This is why I prefer practising shirtless, I thought briefly as I dodged another swipe. The blade skimmed the air just a hair’s-breadth from my chest as I twisted sideways to avoid being stabbed in the heart. My muscles were starting to burn, and the effort of dodging blow after blow was making me sweat. I was starting to think that Shard was actually trying to kill me.

He thrust at me with one Sai, fending off my attempt to block him with his other hand, and I sucked in a breath, bracing for the feeling of the blade piercing my flesh. But it never came. I cracked one eye open and looked down. Shard was holding the tip of his Sai a millimetre from my body, positioned exactly over my heart. If he’d followed through with that strike, it would have killed me; I’d learned in Vampire Biology that it didn’t have to be a stake – anything piercing a vampire’s heart can kill it. That, and prolonged exposure to sunlight without Protections. Beheading is also good. Fire, sometimes, if it burns long enough, otherwise we can just grab a blood-bag and we’ll heal up from the burns in a few weeks.

Letting out a breath of relief, I glared at Shard. He grinned back. “Dead,” he said, seeming to savour the word.

I nodded. “Yeah, I get it. Now can you please put away the pointy thing?”

He snorted and stepped back, twirling his Sai in his hands. I shoved my empty hands in my pockets and sauntered over to where everyone else was gathered on the grass. Wilt looked up at me from his book, gave me a brief, shy smile, and returned to reading. Ryan and Leo were tossing an orb of green light back and forth like a ball. I noticed that every time it touched Ryan’s hands, the orb flashed purple – like Ryan’s eyes. A Juniper’s magic didn’t always mirror their eye colour – I’d seen plenty of Junipers with normal eye colours, like brown and grey, and their magic was always white. I wondered what made some of them, like Leo with his anti-freeze green eyes and Ryan with his amethyst ones, different.

Leo tossed the orb back to Ryan. “You’re still thinking too much, A,” he said to me without even glancing at me. “You’re using your head to anticipate your opponent’s next move – thinking, not reacting. That’s why Shard’s always faster than you. You need to stop thinking and pay attention to his body language – a hand twitching, a muscle tensing, a darting glance – anything can give away what his next move will be. Watch instead of thinking. Stop trying to logic out what he’s planning on doing next.”

He paused, catching the orb as Ryan tossed it back to him. He closed his fist around it, crushing the light, and turned to me with an unexpectedly serious expression.
